Carbide Powder Materials for Thermal Spray
Thermal spray coatings of carbide materials are a proven tool for wear and erosion protection. Our comprehensive carbide portfolio includes the right material to meet your specific wear needs and working environment.
Flexible application options
Depending on the material chosen, carbide materials are generally best applied using the High Speed Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) device. If necessary, acceptable carbide coatings can be carried out using atmospheric plasma spray or flame spraying.
Surface protection for your special wear needs
Thermal sprayed carbide coatings are generally the best choice to protect against:
- Wear
- Adhesion
- Erosion (solid particle or cavitation)
- Friction
- Coup
- Parts removal (Galling)
- Sliding wear
- Hard surfaces
- Complex mixed wear mechanisms
Customized materials for your business environment
In a cobalt matrix, tungsten carbide materials offer the best wear protection. For environments that require better corrosion resistance, we recommend the nickel, cobalt-chrome or cobalt-chrome-nickel matrix. If your application requires service temperatures above 500 ° C (930 ° F), we generally recommend chrome carbide materials containing various amounts of nickel-chrome matrix. Materials with a higher matrix percentage produce coatings with better ductility, resulting in better impact and friction resistance. Conversely, a lower percentage of matrix provides more hardness and better wear resistance.
Material optimization through production
The manufacturing processes used to produce materials directly affect the service and spray properties. Agglomerated and sintered carbides produce surfaces with better micro hardness and coating deposition efficiency compared to fused and ground carbides. Higher accumulation efficiency is obtained by more powder condensation. With production processes, carbide materials are optimized for various applications and spraying processes. Many of the product liquids are supplied in different powder sizes to suit special liquid fuel or gas fuel HVOF spray guns. The right combination of all these optimization procedures saves time, money and prolongs surface service life in your production.
Alternative to hard chrome plating
Thermal spray carbides are an excellent alternative to hard chrome plating, especially for landing gear, hydraulic rods and oilfield equipment. The benefits are:
- Faster implementation, time component reduction is out of service
- Better adaptation of the material to the working environment
- Smooth “sprayed” surfaces that can be used frequently without further processing
Fine carbides for non-machining components
We offer very fine carbide materials for difficult components or very expensive machines. They provide a very smooth “sprayed” surface that requires little or no treatment. For example, the corrugated rollers used in the paper industry require a wear-resistant surface, but have a difficult geometry in terms of machining costs.
